David Joyner was born in Philly... raised on the The Whispers
and Teddy Pendergrass. Music has been his passion his whole life.
When it came to school, he never had to think twice... he
was going to make his mark in the music business.
"I spent a lot of time thinking about what
music school I wanted to go to, and I
ended up selecting the Recording Arts
program at Full Sail." So, he moved to
Florida, and immersed himself in the school.
"The schedule was brutal. There's no way you
could got to school, go to a job, and still get
sleep." Broke and sleep-deprived, David
graduated in the fall 2008.
He found it easy to find engineering work. "I interned at Soap-
Box Studios in Atlanta, then left them for Music House Studios
where I worked up from intern to become assistant engineer,"
he said. "I was working the big boards and recording some big
names, but it being an engineer wasn't my passion." He
wanted to make music, not record music.
In early 2009, David came across a copy of Remix Magazine, and
inside was an offer from Icon... submit an essay: "What's your
passion?", and you could win a free scholarship to Icon Los Ange-
les. It was easy to write, and he sent it in, and pretty much forgot
about it. He continued climbing the ladder as an
engineer, but always working on his grooves in his
                     spare time.
David was in Atlanta in November 2009, when Icon
called him. He had won the scholarship. Get your
rear on a plane, and come to our school in LA. David
looked around him, and said, "Im' outta here." He
started in the spring quarter 2010, and meshed
with the vibe at Icon right away. Soon, the walls
                     were thumping with his grooves.
"Icon focuses on making music, period. Everything we did in Logic
and Ableton was focused on making music." David still has one
semester to go, but Icon has already changed his path. "After
being through the program at Icon, I know I have what it takes to
be a successful artist, and approach not only my career, but my
life in a new way."
